| Surgical systems can be used for a wide variety of surgeries. The benefits of robotic surgical systems are the great increase in precision and reductions in incision size, blood loss, pain and healing time. The most recent machine the da Vinci Surgical system has 4 robotic arms and uses a very complex 3-D camera system. Surgeons use a console to operate the arms of the system as well as move the camera. In 2006 the da Vinci was used in over 48,000 procedures and costs 1.2 million dollars. The precision of the robotic surgery systems can be used for general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics and pediatrics. Limitations exist as well. Robotic surgery systems are very costly to obtain, maintain and operate. |
